COMPASS

COMPASS is the City of London's Corporate Geographic Information System (GIS). Using COMPASS you can,

  • Switch maps on and off
  • Zoom and pan to areas of interest in the City
  • Get more information about the features on the map
  • Search for information in the maps
  • Gain links to further information

COMPASS is made up of a toolbar, a map window and a 'Maps' table of contents (TOC). When you first open COMPASS this is what it looks like,

The toolbar

The toolbar on the left hand side of the map allows you to move around the map and interact with it. The toolbar is divided into 'Navigation Tools' and 'Map Tools'. Each tool on the toolbar is described below.

Zoom In - click or drag a rectangle on the map to zoom in

Zoom Out - click or drag a rectangle on the map to zoom out

Full Map - zoom to the full extent of all the maps

Last Map - zoom to the last extent

Pan - drag on the map to move the map

More Information... - click on a feature on the map for more information

Select - click to search for text

Clear Selection - click to search for live streetworks

Measure - click to search for coordinates

Measure - click to measure a distance on the map

Measure - click to clear the current selection

Print - click to print the current map

Table of Contents

The Table of Contents (TOC) contains nearly 50 maps that are available to view in the map window.

Individual maps in the TOC are grouped by theme and the user can choose to expand the group, and see all the maps in the group, by clicking on the + symbol next to the group name.

In addition to this the user can show all the maps in the group in the map window by clicking the tick box next to the group name.

Individual maps can be displayed by checking the tick box next to the map name.

To use a map in conjunction with a map tool, for example 'Text Search' click the 'Searchable' button next to the map name.
